DON’T EVER GIVE UP
Where are you?
Where have you been?
And, while we’re at it, where are you going?
This trio of deceptively simple questions are what Jimmy Valvano urged the audience at the 1993 ESPY awards to ask themselves. These are the questions that led him to where he was at that moment—accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in front of thousands of people—and they are questions that can help anyone get to where they want to be.
Jimmy V’s speech is just one illustration of the way he lived his life: with gusto. Stricken with cancer, he had just over a month left to live at the time of the awards; but there’s not a hint of defeat, fatigue, or resignation in this speech. “Be enthusiastic every day,” he says, and its clear in his voice, his eyes, his body language, that this is advice he lives and breathes.
We challenge you to watch this video and not feel inspired to go out and seize the day. Transforming your life into the life you want won’t happen in one day, but if you know where you want to go, and keep your dreams alive, it will happen. At the very least, if every day you laugh, think, and cry, as Jimmy encourages, you’ll have “a heck of a day.” And one day at a time, that will turn into a heck of a life.
Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.
